Ruby Rose Admits “Taxing” Schedule Led To ‘Batwoman’ Departure

After months of speculation, fromer Batwoman star Ruby Rose is setting the record straight about her departure from the The CW series.

As she told EW, a mixture of the taxing schedule and the spinal cord injury she suffered on a film prior to starting Batwoman (and a subsequent surgery to repair the damage) contributed to her decision to quit. “I had my surgery and then 10 days later I went to work, which maybe wasn’t the best idea,” she said. “Most people take about a month or three off before they return to work, so it was definitely made more difficult by that. But as far as being a lead of a show or a film — regardless if it’s action or if it’s emotional — in whichever ways it’s taxing.”

Having been on the sets of the various CW shows for just one day each over the last few years, we can tell you the shoots are long and despite the supposed glamor of film and television, actually making content is physically and mentally demanding. Rose, who had previous starred in films and guest-starred in shows like Orange is the New Black, never before starred in a network show with a 22 episode commitment and months-on-end of 12-14 hour days.

Combine that with an attempt to recover from a serious surgery and it is easy to see why she might want to leave. Although, Rose continued to downplay how much her recovery contributed to the decision.

When the series returns in 2021, Javicia Leslie will star as Ryan Wilder, a new character who will take up the cowl. Of course, it remains to be seen how Batwoman will deal with Kate Kane’s (Rose) sudden disappearance or the Season 1 cliffhanger — Hush assuming the identity of Bruce Wayne. But maybe the latter will aid the former. Meanwhile, it seems the rest of the cast, including Rachel Skarsten as lead villain Alice, will remain on the show; preserving some continuity as even as the show re-establishes itself with a new lead.
