Comics Crowdfunding Round-Up: STARLESS DAYDREAM, HIRAETH and 3 more campaigns we love

Welcome to The Beat’s crowdfunding round-up: a collection of some of our favorite campaigns from the week including one-shots, on-goings, anthologies and everything in-between! This week we’re checking out the sort-of-continued adventures of the not-totally-real anime Starless Daydream, an anthology of thoughts and meditations on home in Hiraeth, and more.

Let’s get started!

PROJECT: STARLESS DAYDREAM

starless daydream

Goal: $2,000

Over 30 comic creators come together to create the finale to a mech anime that never existed!

Project: Starless Daydream is the epic finale to a fictional mecha anime, told as one comprehensive story with over 30 creatives. Structurally, it’s being called a “narrative zine” which compiles the traditional sequential art, as well as pin-ups, character profiles, and journal entries. On the art side, you’ll recognize names like Skylar Patridge, Sebastián Píriz, and Artyom Trakhanov, while organizer Frankee White writes and Danny Lore edits. Starless Daydream is a story of dealing with post-war trauma, and reuniting with lost friends.

Six-Petal Pyramid Chapter Two

six-petal pyramid

Creators: Maria Bryant (author)
Goal: $2,000
End date: September 10, 2020
Goodies: A PDF of this comic is $4, a physical version is $12, while other tiers include sticker sheets, back issues and more.

She found a mummy. Now, what? The suspenseful webcomic’s second chapter comes to print! But, ultimately, this is a romance…

Six-Petal Pyramid is a webcomic about a college dropout working in a local museum and coping with mental health issues – oh yeah and there are apparitions, mummies, and supernatural tendrils. In a nutshell, Bryant’s comic combines a love for history and the weird with romance and LGBTQ+ issues, and in this next chapter we pick up after Caroline discovers a mummy living in the museum attic. If she can even convince herself to trust her own eyes, she’ll have to figure out what to do with this, and who she can go to for help. Check it out for yourself over on Tapas or Webtoon.

The human race is going to be wiped out in 24 hours, so let’s start a band! With illustrator Anke Gadnick.

In this post-apocalyptic series, a pair of survivors bands together against it all to rock out ‘till the end. Ghost Band follows Sven and Johanna, two teens who are imports to San Francisco and totally unfamiliar with its recently rocky political climate and ongoing battles of ideologies. As a result, their ideas about identity, community, purpose are all put to the test. McNamara is no stranger to Kickstarter, having penned stories including Nocturnal Commisions, The Cicada, and Sucker, and while Gladnick’s sharp illustrations can be found on NBC, WaPo, NPR, and The Intercept as well as the No Refunds anthology.

Creators: Ilinca Barbacuta (creator/organizer)
Goal: $15,951
End date: September 9, 2020

An upcoming art book based around the concept of narrative spaces, treasured locations, and what “home” means to you.

Hiraeth brings together 28 artists, all interpreting their memories, narratives, and stories to create real and imagined locations. It’s the second swing for a campaign that was forced to take a step back after COVID complications. After a shaky mid-pandemic launch earlier this year, the Hiraeth team has reassembled and reorganized its budget to produce this book and pay its creators, who have already completed their part of the process. With a team including the likes of Ashanti Fortson, Shazleen Khan, and more, this is a project you don’t want to miss.

Haru – A Fantasy Adventure Comic

haru part 2

Creators: Joe Latham (author)
Goal: $1,310
End date: September 18, 2020
Goodies: A digital version is $4, a physical version is $8, and other rewards include back issues, the I Am Winter prequel comic, and more.

Haru has big dreams but feels trapped by the unmoving safety of the valley, until the day comes that a great darkness crosses their path.

Meet Haru: a small, blue, flightless bird with big dreams of moving out of their quaint, peaceful valley where nothing goes wrong and everything is perfect. The story kicks off with this hopeful notion of starting new in spite of a looming uneasiness, and taking matters into their own hands to protect what they love. It’s a naturalistic fantasy with heart, illustrated by Latham with awe-inducing images and coloring. In this second outing for the series Haru meets a new friend: a sprightful mushroom man named Todd. Get caught up, or stay on board with this campaign for Haru Part 2.
