HBO Max Picks Up ‘Lumberjanes’ Animated Series

It will be “friendship to the max” at HBO Max.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming service is developing an animated series based on Lumberjanes. The Boom! Studios comic tells the tale of five campers at Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thilstle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types. While each is unique in their own way, the camp’s unusual merit badge system and the time-warping, magical forest surrounding them will test their spirits over a very long summer. Also, there might be a few gods hanging around and maybe an alternate universe to explore.

Noelle Stevenson, one of the book’s co-creators and the executive producer of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, will write an animated special introducing the concept to Max audiences and executive produce the eventual series. Boom’s Ross Richie and Stephen Christy are aboard as executive producers while the other Lumberjanes creators — Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, and Brooklyn Allen — will be credited as co-executive producer alongside Boom’s Mette Norkjaer.

In 2015, the comic was slated to become an animated film at 20th Century Fox with Will Widger adapting the comic. The studio’s eventual merger with Disney put the kibosh on those plans and Stevenson began pitching the concept as a series. Boom! has a first look deal with Netflix, but THR reports the program sparked a bidding war among the streamers with HBO Max winning out.

The comic book itself is set to finally wrap up in December, which definitely gives the news a sense of kismet. Sure, it may be another two years before the series debuts, but landing on a key streaming service has a nice sense of symmetry just as the comic heads off into the sunset.
