Xochitl Gomez Joins ‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel Cast

Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness resumes development.

According to Deadline, The Baby-Sitters Club‘s Xochitl Gomez has joined the cast. Benedict Cumberbatch returns as Doctor Stephen Strange, the noted surgeon turned practitioner of the mystical arts. Elizabeth Olsen is also onboard as the Scarlet Witch, who will reportedly receive that name in the upcoming WandaVision Disney+ series. Benedict Wong and Chiwetel Ejiofor will reprise their roles as Wong and Mordo from the first film. Gomez’s role is currently a closely-held secret.

News of the production went quiet as director Sam Raimi took over from the departing Scott Derrickson, who left the sequel over creative differences with Marvel Studios. Before his departure, he said the film would be Marvel’s first true horror film. Raimi’s presence suggests a horror tone may still be in the cards, but perhaps something a little less unsettling than Derrickson envisioned.

Raimi, of course, helped usher in the modern superhero movie age with the original Spider-Man trilogy. And considering Dr. Strange’s presence in the third Tom Holland Spider-Man film, it is a remote possibility he will direct a Spider-Man again.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to open on March 25th, 2022.
