Batman Goes To The 1970s In ‘Batman: Soul Of The Dragon’ Trailer

The next Batman animated feature will have a decidedly 1970s feel. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced this week the next DC Universe Movie will be Batman: Soul of the Dragon. Clearly set in the 1970s, it sees Batman, Richard Dragon, Lady Shiva, and Ben Turner teaming up to face off against the Kobra Cult in story clearly inspired by Enter the Dragon and any number of grindhouse kung-fu movies from the era.

David Giuntoli stars as Bruce Wayne/Batman with Mark Dacascos as Richard Dragon, Kelly Hu as Lady Shiva and Michael Jai White as Ben Turner; a role he played in live action over on Arrow. The film even features the legendary character actor James Hong as O-Sensei, the group’s martial arts master. Additional voices include Josh Keaton, Grey Griffin, Chris Cox, Erica Luttrell, Robin Atkin Downes, Patrick Seitz, Jamie Chung and Eric Bauza.

Sam Liu directs from a script by Jeremy Adams which tips its hat to the dearly departed Denny O’Neil, who passed away earlier this year and co-created Dragon, Turner, Shiva, and O-Sensei.
Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau serve as producers while Bruce Timm, Sam
Register and Michael Uslan server as executive producers.

And, we have to admit, a celebration of O’Neil’s martial arts creations is so inspired, we feel like a live action CW or HBO Max series should follow it up. It could even serve as a gateway for the O’Neil reinvention of the Question to finally make a live action appearance.

Batman: Soul of the Dragon comes to digital platforms on January 12th and on disc formats January 26th.
