Previewing ‘The Return Of Sexton Blake’: One Of Britain’s Best Sleuths Is Back With A New Strip

A classic British sleuth makes a triumphant comeback in The Return of Sexton Blake! – ‘As brilliant as Holmes, as daring as Bond, the Jack Reacher of his day returns!

This new 100-page collection of comics, prose, articles, and artwork featuring one of literature’s greatest detectives, coming just ahead of a brand-new reprint series of Sexton Blake Books coming from Rebellion that bring these classics back into print for the first time in decades.

The Return of Sexton Blake collection features two Sexton Blake comics – the complete ‘Sexton Blake and the Terror of Troll Island’ from Tornado issue #1-9 (1979) by Chris Lowder and Mike Dorey, where it was published as Victor Drago due to those pesky last-minute rights issues, and a brand-new strip, The Death and Life of Sexton Blake by George Mann and Jimmy Broxton.

Alongside these two Sexton Blake comic strips, you’ll also find Blake artwork from Edouard Groult and Mike Fyles and two prose tales – the full short story, ‘Lady Molly’s First Case by E. Sempill (aka M. Storm – from Penny Pictorial issue #499, #1908) and an excerpt from ‘The Case of the Seventh Key by W.W. Sayer (from Union Jack #1,115, 1925).

As for the articles delving into the rich history of the character, Karl Stock interviews the creative team of George Mann and Jimmy Broxton, responsible for the first new Sexton Blake comic strip adventure since the brief Sexton Blake comic run in Valiant.

Stock also takes a look back at the ‘Victor Drago’ strip that ran in Tornado back in 1979, a character that WAS Sexton Blake in all but name, and interviews Theo Bain, the man responsible for designing the new line of repackaged Sexton Blake tales. Finally, Mark Hodder writes of ‘The Men Who Drew Sexton Blake’, looking at all those incredible artists who’ve had a hand in visualising this great detective over the years.

This 100-page collection of old and new, of articles, artwork, and a brand-new Sexton Blake strip, marks a major return for a classic character, one that deserves to sit alongside the very best of the world’s detectives.

The Return of Sexton Blake collection is released from Rebellion on 25 November.

And you can get the newly repackaged Sexton Blake tales from Rebellion from the end of 2020 and through into 2021…
