‘The Last Of Us’ Goes To Series At HBO Max

HBO Max continues to diversify its roster with geek-leaning properties.

The services announced Friday that it has given a series order to The Last of Us. Based on the Naughty Dog video game series of the same name, it will tell the tale of fan-favorite characters Joel and Ellie. Twenty-seven years after modern civilization is destroyed because of a zombie nightmare, hardened survivor Joel is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. As HBO Max puts it, “what starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.”

Chernobyl‘s Craig Mazin and Last of Us co-creator Neill Druckmann will write the series. They will also serve as executive producers alongside Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, and Carter Swan.

“Craig and Neil are visionaries in a league of their own,” HBO Programming Executive Vice President Francesca Orsi said in a statement. “With them at the helm alongside the incomparable Carolyn Strauss, this series is sure to resonate with both die-hard fans of The Last of Us games and newcomers to this genre-defining saga.”

Of course, as with all recent announcements, it is unclear how quickly The Last of Us will go into production. Additionally, it is unclear if the series will be limited in nature, like HBO Max’s DMZ, or plan a long life for itself. Considering the span of years the game series unfolds over, it is possible to tell many stories across multiple seasons.

Additionally, picking up programs like The Last of Us and DMZ shows the service has an interest in a wide range of stories sourced from geek circles likes comics and video games. This can only be a net benefit if given the same sort of production values and treatment HBO gives its other programing.
