DreamWorks To Adapt Dav Pilkey’s ‘Dog Man’

Dav Pilkey‘s world continues to expand.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, DreamWorks Animation will adapt the Captain Underpants creator’s spinoff series Dog Man into an animated film. Intended to be the work of Captain Underpants characters, Dog Man tells the tale of superhero dog, his feline friend, Lil’ Petey, and an artistically inclined robot.

The series, published by Scholastic, has outperformed the Captain Underpants series — and as THR notes, it sells vastly better than any superhero title published by the big two. As a children’s series, it emphasizes notions of empathy, doing good, and owning up to ones mistakes.

Hopefully, this sensibility will make it to the screen. Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain veteran Peter Hastings is attached to direct the film. That pedigree might suggest a more sarcastic take on the material, but considering DreamWorks already worked with Pilkey on Captain Underpants: The First Movie, and Hastings worked on The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants television series, one can be fairly sure they get to the tone of his work.

“I am humbled and grateful to once again work with the brilliant Peter Hastings and the outstanding team at DreamWorks Animation,” Pilkey said in a statement.

Hastings added, “This is my second project based on Dav Pilkey’s books and I’m very excited to take his funny, clever, emotional and ultimately inspirational Dog Man and make it move!”

As with all recent announcements, it is unclear when Dog Man will debut — indeed, it’s now unclear where it might debut. With theaters in a precarious state and the various streaming services needing content, it is possible for the film to emerge in a very different landscape. Not matter what though, families can look forward to it in the relative short term.
