You Have No Idea What Archie Is Going Through In This Preview For Next Week’s ‘Riverdale’

Just when you thought Riverdale wasn’t angsty enough … next week’s promo is all about Archie (KJ Apa), and from the way he takes that baseball bat to his TV, I’d say the Auteur’s newest video got to him.

Riverdale‘s fifth season premiere ended with Archie finding a VHS tape of his father’s murder being reenacted (or at least the part where Archie was being held at gunpoint by his father’s killer). Assuming that’s the reason he’s hulking out on the TV (clearly he doesn’t realize VCRs are hard to come by), that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

If there’s a lesson to be learned from this week’s Riverdale, it’s a lesson in timing. Senior prom is not the time to break-up with your long-term girlfriend. While Toni (Vanessa Morgan) has the thoughtfulness to wait until after prom to tell Cheryl she can’t spend the night with her, Archie decides to choose the dance to tell Veronica that he and Betty kissed.

Why, Archie? Why? Why would you do that?

And why is the question. Is this all in the name of white-fanging Veronica (Camila Mendes) so she’ll go to Barnard (like Schmidt on New Girl) or is Archie just telling himself that because he won’t admit he has feelings for Betty? It’s annoying either way. Also, does Betty (Lili Reinhart) feel the same way? Because while the show has been anything but subtle when it comes to Archie’s changing feelings, Betty still seems to be in love with Jughead (Cole Sprouse).

Last year, Morgan spoke out about the lack of storylines for Toni and sure enough her storyline this season shows the most promise, as we learn of her family’s deep-seated hatred of the Blossoms and how that could affect her relationship with Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch).

Meanwhile, Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos) and Archie need to go their separate ways. They’ve both tried to kill each other. Hiram’s not going to take the break-up well, yet somehow Archie is supposed to let bygones be bygones and agree to work for him as deputy mayor.

It’s hard to know whether to read into K.O. (Zane Holtz) appearing in this episode as a sign more Katy Keene characters may be appearing in the future. Since this episode was intended for season four, Katy Keene wasn’t cancelled yet, so this might be a one-time thing but K.O. fits right in on Riverdale, even if crashing their prom doesn’t really make sense.

Riverdale airs Wednesdays on The CW.
