Alice Oseman’s queer romance webcomic Heartstopper is coming to Netflix

Alice Oseman’s Heartstopper, a webcomic/graphic novel series about a queer romance, is coming to Netflix, Deadline reports.  Oseman will adapt the eight-part adaptation herself, wigth Doctor Who’s Euros Lyn slated to direct. See Saw Productions optioned the series 18 months ago and will produce.

Heartstopper is available as a webcomic on Tapas and Tumblr, and it’s also a very popular graphic novel series from Hachette, with four volumes in print.

The story is set at a British all-boy grammar school, where “Charlie, a highly-strung, openly gay over-thinker, and Nick, a cheerful, soft-hearted rugby player, meet.” Friendship and more follow over the course of many sweet, feelgood pages. (The Beat interviewed Oseman last year.)

According to Deadline:

Creator Oseman said she was “over the moon” that Heartstopper had landed at Netflix. “I feel incredibly lucky to get to work with a team of passionate, creative people who all adore Heartstopper and want to make it the most beautiful show we can. It’s a joy and an honour to get to re-tell Nick and Charlie’s story for TV and I am so excited to share it not only with Heartstopper’s existing readership, but also a whole new audience around the world.”

Alexi Wheeler, Director, Kids & Family Content, said that he knew they were being pitched something “incredible” the first-time that See-Saw introduced him to Oseman and that “there was no way we could not make it”.

“It was clear right away that Alice not only had created these brilliant and emotionally engaging characters, but the world they populated was relatable yet somehow aspirational. The whole thing is just so poignant and beautifully crafted. To tell a love story between two boys who meet at school involves such vision and creative focus, Alice has absolutely delivered this here,” he said.

In case you haven’t heard of Oseman – twust me, you will. The 26-year-old, who is from Kent, England, got her start writing YA novels, with her first book published when she was just 19. Somewhere along the way, she started making a webcomic, to even more success. She has a popular Patreon, and now she’s getting to adapt her own webcomic for Netflix. If we were doing a Thirty under Thirty for comics, Oseman would be at the top of the list.

And if you want to be ON the Heartstopper show? They are casting!
