‘Lovecraft Country’ Creator Misha Green To Helm ‘Tomb Raider’ Sequel

Could Misha Green lead Tomb Raider to a successful sequel?

According to Deadline, the Lovecraft Country creator is willing to try as she is slated to both write and direct the sequel to 2018’s filmic reboot of Crystal Dynamic’s 2013 video game reboot of Eidos Interactive’s beloved 3D action platformer series. Alicia Vikander is also set to return as Lara Croft, the titular Tomb Raider, but it remains to be seen if Green will take inspiration from Rise of the Tomb Raider, the 2015 video game sequel or go off in a different direction. Indeed, the storyline of 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider cooled off on the elements from Rise seemingly seeded in the 2018 film: a conflict between Lara and an organization called Trinity.

In its place, we hope Green introduces a supernatural elements, something the 2018 film backed away from, and maybe a few of the other more interesting characters and ideas from the reboot game trilogy. They are, on the whole, surprisingly great games — yes, even Shadow has some things going for it — and getting a little bit more of their sense of adventure would be a worthwhile goal.

It would certainly be a better place to start than the previous Tomb Raider film sequel, 2003’s Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, which went off the rails in a spectacular way only director Jan de Bont could accomplish. Indeed, it is worth noting Green will be the first woman to direct a Tomb Raider film. The 2018 entry was directed by Roar Uthaug to some quality.

It is unclear when the film will arrive in theaters. As with all things, COVID-19 makes delays inevitable. But it will be interesting to see how this project develops.
