‘Black Panther;’ Director Ryan Coogler Developing A Wakanda-Set Series For Disney+

It will be Wakanda forever on Disney+.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler and his production company, Proximity Media, will be developing a Wakanda-set series for Disney+. He will also “have a hand” in other Marvel programs in development. The whole thing is part of a five-year overall deal between Disney and Proximity Media, which is pretty exciting by itself. But, of course, as we’re primarily concerned with the Marvel Cinematic Universe around here, Coogler’s continued participation in the MCU is always big news.

Of course, no details about the program are available. It is easy to assume it might focus on any of the characters featured in Black Panther. It is also easy to imagine the series focusing a new group of Wakandans who face their own struggles in the backdrop of the most interesting country on MCU’s Earth. Both options certainly have their advantages. And although the series will reportedly be set within Wakanda’s borders, we would love to see some Marvel film or series follow up on T’Challa’s (Chadwick Boseman) promise to open Wakandan embassies around the world. It would be a fitting tribute to Boseman if the plan to do good continues even if T’Challa himself is never seen again.

Granted, we still don’t know what will become of T’Challa within the MCU. Coogler is still writing the script and production is expected to being in the summer. As Marvel has stated repeatedly, the part will not be recast and the studio will use no visual effects trickery to retain Boseman in the film. Presumably, that means the film will concern the next Black Panther with Shiri (Leticia Wright) seemingly the most likely candidate. But time, of course, will tell.

In a statement, Coogler said of Proximity’s deal with Disney, “We look forward to learning, growing, and building a relationship with audiences all over the world through the Disney platforms. We are especially excited that we will be taking our first leap with Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and their partners at Marvel Studios where we will be working closely with them on select MCU shows for Disney+. We’re already in the mix on some projects that we can’t wait to share.”

The Disney+ Wakanda series is not yet scheduled for release.
