We’ve been looking forward to the “Harold and the Purple Crayon” movie for a while and now we finally know who’s going to star in it. Sounds like Zachary Levi (“Shazam!“) is set to play the leading role.

Based on the book by Crockett Johnson that came out in 1955, the movie will be the first live-action adaptation of the story.

Warner Bros. Pictures

You may remember watching the cartoon in your youth. The cartoon came out in 1959 and was played on television on educational channels for kids for decades later. Another series adaptation came out in 2002 for HBO.

This movie will mark the third adaptation of the book, not counting a “The Simpsons” couch gag and a Jimmy Kimmel skit.

Originally the film was announced back in 2010 with Warner Bros. Pictures, Columbia Pictures, and Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment developing it. It was going to be produced by Smith and James Lassiter and written by Josh Klausner. In 2016, it was revealed that Dallas Clayton would be helping with the script.

We know now that David Guion and Michael Handelman have replaced Klausner and Clayton as screenwriters, and John Davis will be producing.

It seems like it’s taken a LONG time for this movie to get started rolling but now with the announcement of Zachary Levi in the lead we can expect that they will be filming it soon. We can’t think of anyone who could play a kid at heart as well as he can so we’re hoping he plays some iteration of Harold. So far there is no word on an expected release date.
