Marvel Studios Finally Hires A Writer For ‘Blade’; Stacy Osei-Kuffour To Pen Script

After announcing Blade at their 2019 Comic-Con International: San Diego presentation, Marvel has finally found a writer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, playwright and Watchmen story editor Stacy Osei-Kuffour will script the upcoming film starring Mahershala Ali as the famed Daywalker and vampire hunter. Created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan for Marvel’s early horror series, The Tomb of Dracula, the character was the first of the Marvel stable to gain box office success with the 1998’s Blade. Since then, the character has appeared in two sequels, a short-lived television show, and numerous animated appearances, but his status in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was unknown until Ali appeared at that 2019 Comic-Con presentation.

Since then, details about the picture have been hard to come by. Indeed, it seems Marvel took its sweet time finding the right talent for a good reason. As THR reports, Osei-Kuffour got the job after Marvel and Ali spent six months looking for the right Black writer to bring a new light to the Daywalker. As a result, she is the first Black woman to write a Marvel feature — and yes, it does matter.

Next, the production must find a director. Presumably, Ali will be as involved in the selection process as he was with Osei-Kuffour. Although development will speed up with a writer on board, it will still be sometime before the film is ready for release. But since Marvel and Disney map out release dates well in advance, it is possible it could be one of the late 2024 or early 2025 releases. Other films likely to be released around that time include Fantastic Four and Deadpool 3 — which would almost suggest a planned run of films featuring characters from formerly outside film franchises making their MCU debut.

One had to wonder if the X-Men will be next?
