Sadly, the time has come for Wynonna Earp (Melanie Scrofano) to hang up her gun.
As TV Insider reports, the series will return March 5 for the final six episodes of its long-delayed fourth season; which will also serve as the program’s last days. In a statement, executive producer Emily Andras said “I’d like to thank our wonderful cast and crew, all of whom were instrumental in bringing Wynonna Earp to our loyal and passionate audience.” She also added, “We couldn’t be prouder of these last six episodes on Syfy, and are thrilled to share them with our beloved fans, who have changed our lives forever. I have been honored to tell Wynonna and her family’s story, and along with Seven24, Cineflix and CTV Sci-Fi, are hopeful we can continue to share their inspiring tales in the future.”
Hope does spring eternal for the series.
Renewed for a fourth season in 2018, the series ran into trouble when its primary production company ran out of cash. A deal was eventually struck, but it took eighteen months of negotiations and a prolonged fan campaign. And when the show finally went back into production, it was stuck by another delay: the COVID-19 pandemic. Syfy aired the first four episodes of Season 4 last year just as production on the final six resumed in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Some reports in 2019 indicated Syfy ordered a fifth season at the same time it order a fourth, but it is understandable why the network — if it did order a fifth season — would reconsider.
Which does nothing to alleviate our sadness that the show is coming to an end in its current form. Wynonna Earp has been one of our favorite shows since it began and nothing quite like it will appear on television for some time. But, at least, we have six more episodes to look forward to and it better feature the WayHaught wedding.
