Chris Pine‘s Dungeon & Dragon party is starting to form.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Michelle Rodriguez and Justice Smith have joined the upcoming Paramount picture from Game Night directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. The project is, of course, based on the on the table top role playing game devised by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson — and currently published by Hasbro subsidiary Wizards of the Coast — which empowers players to become any combination of mythical fantasy race, character class, and moral alignment. With a character “rolled,” they set out to defeat powerful enemies, find loot where they can get it, and typically frustrate the Game Master; a friend who takes on the role of playing the rest of the fantasy realm, devises story, and attempts to foil the players’ plans.
Details about the plot are still unknown, so it is unclear if Pine, Rodriguez and Smith are playing characters in a D&D world or players of the game. We hope its the latter as the communal storytelling aspect of D&D has been the secret to its longevity. Also, attempts to make a straight fantasy film out of the concept has led to, well, one entertaining, yet terrible film (2000’s Dungeons & Dragons) and a couple of forgettable sequels.
Dungeons & Dragons is set for release on May 27, 2022.
