DC Comics has announced a new Geoff Johns-written one-shot featuring Stargirl. The Stargirl Spring Break Special one-shot will be written by Johns, with art by Todd Nauck and Hi-Fi. The announcement arrives on the same day that multiple actresses have come out in support of actor Ray Fisher‘s allegations of inappropriate conduct by Joss Whedon on the set of the Johns-produced Justice League film.
Here’s how DC describes the special:
Courtney Whitmore’s spring break plans aren’t like your average high schooler’s. Instead of hanging out with friends, she’s heading out on an adventure with her stepfather, Pat Dugan, a.k.a. S.T.R.I.P.E., and teaming up with his former team, the Seven Soldiers of Victory! The soldiers are forced to reunite again to unearth the secret eighth soldier of victory, but what other secrets lay buried, and what does it all mean for Courtney’s future as Stargirl?
Johns, who began his career in film and has been a guiding figure in Warner Brothers and DC’s film franchises, is the co-creator of Courtney “Stargirl” Whitmore along with artist Dean Motter. He’s also no stranger to the Seven Soldiers of Victory, having written a new version of the team as part of the 2000 Silver Age event series. The new one-shot appears to reintroduce both the original Shining Knight and the Jill Carlyle version of the Crimson Avenger, the latter of whom Johns created in the pages of Stars & STRIPE #9 with artist Scott Kolins in 2000.
Johns has come under scrutiny in recent months after actor Fisher accused he and fellow Justice League producer Jon Berg of enabling what Fisher called “abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable” behavior by Whedon on the set. Fisher later elaborated that Johns played a direct role in some of the behavior, which he said included “blatant racism.” At least one allegation of inappropriate contact between Johns and underage fans has also come out in the wake of Fisher’s statements.
Actresses Charisma Carpenter, Amber Benson, and Michelle Trachtenberg have all come out with statements today in support of Fisher’s allegations about Whedon’s behavior, recounting to varying degrees their own experiences with Whedon on the sets of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Carpenter’s story is particularly harrowing, and includes verbal harassment, intimidation, and even religious discrimination directed towards her by Whedon.
With discussion about Whedon and his poor treatment of his cast members dominating discussion on social media today, and the apparent role that Johns played in enabling, if not encouraging, that behavior on the set of Justice League, DC’s announcement of the new Johns-written Stargirl one-shot couldn’t have come at a less opportune time.
The Stargirl Spring Break Special #1 arrives in stores and digitally on Tuesday, May 4th.
