Help Support Time Bomb’s Flintlock Book Five

More Adventures Coming

We here at Tripwire are always happy to spotlight comic crowdfunding projects and Time Bomb is currently running a campaign to get its fifth Flintlock anthology funded. Here’s a few details…

Flintlock is a regular comics anthology series with a difference – each  book tells stories featuring a unique range of genuinely diverse  characters in an Eighteenth Century shared historical timeline. This  period (1701 to 1800) was the era of highwaymen, pirates, samurai,  exploration and upheaval, and encompassed some of the most tumultuous  changes in world history involving some of the richest personalities –  and this is one of the inspirations for the stories and characters that  feature in Flintlock.

Reaction to the previous Flintlock books has been phenomenal – I’m  delighted that so many people are enjoying the stories and the concept  behind it. The previous four Flintlock books have all been successfully  pre-ordered through Kickstarter and I’m hoping Flintlock Book Five will  be equally well received. This latest volume will be  64 pages, perfect  bound, with a full colour cardstock cover and black and white interiors,  with four stories including the continuing adventures of highwayman  Lady Flintlock in the 1750’s, another adventure for Onna in 1740’s Japan, a 1760’s encounter for the Clockwork Cavalier and Sparrowhawk unravels more murder mystery in 1790’s  Australia. Flintlock Book Five also features a sumptuous cover by the legendary  British comics artist John M Burns!

Pre-ordering Book Five through this campaign can also get you some  very unique special rewards for doing so, and ensures you get your copy  of the book cheaper than it will be offered to the  mass-market when it’s published in Spring 2021.

But if you’ve missed our previous books don’t worry –   there’s still  opportunity to join us and catch-up on all our 18th Century adventures  with this campaign as there are both reward and add-on options that  include all the previous books and the spin-off one-shot featuring the  Clockwork Cavalier, as well as the Dick Turpin graphic novella that was also successfully pre-ordered through Kickstarter last year. Both these books are set in the Flintlock timeline, and add another layer to our 18th Century adventures.

So what you can expect from our fifth volume? Well, let’s take a look…

Highwayman Lady Flintlock returns, with the brilliant artist Gareth  Sleightholme once again producing some stunningly  atmospheric pages. In Book Four we left with quite a cliff hanger, so Book Five picks up where we left off. No spoilers  here, of course, but I can guarantee the latest chapter of Lady Flintlock takes a very tragic turn…

We head to 1790’s Australia, almost a  decade after the First  Fleet landed in 1787 to lay the foundations of a thriving penal colony  in New South Wales, with another murder mystery for Peg Sparrowhawk to solve, with artwork by Carlos Angeli. Brought over on a transport  herself, middle-aged Peg has brought to the colony her years of dubious  experience, and the powers that be in this harsh environment sometimes  make use of it. They say you can use a thief to catch a thief, so surely  you can do the same to catch a murderer…?

We go to 1740’s Japan as Onna returns to the pages of Flintlock, once again featuring  the wonderful artwork of Caroline Parkinson, and a story set in and around the actual Sefa Utaki shrine in Okinawa…

The Clockwork Cavalier also returns, with artwork by Francesco Archidiacono who drew the pages for The Clockwork Cavalier Special in 2019. It’s the winter of 1766, and in the snow that blankets Epping Forest a matter of honour must be decided…

THE REWARDS

The Flintlock Book Five reward levels  offer a range of fairly priced  standard, enhanced and limited options.  There’s some I’d like to  spotlight in particular, though:

Digital edition – The £5 tier gives you a digital copy of the book.   What makes this reward special is that the digital edition will not be  offered through any other online digital distribution service until at  least June 2021, so this will be the only way to get a digital copy  until then.

Print edition – If you just want the printed 64 page book with no  frills the £10 tier is for you, although you will also get the £5 digital book included in this reward, giving this package a content  value boost. With free postage to UK addresses and at cost shipping  elsewhere this is once again your opportunity to get Flintlock cheaper  than it will be anywhere else.

Printed Plus – Backers of any of my previous campaigns will know that  this reward tier is very much the added value option, as should we  reach any stretch goal targets then every one unlocked automatically  goes into this reward package. (Based on my previous campaigns, backers  at this reward level can expect to receive at least an extra £20 of  content, often considerably more.) Obviously, there’s no guarantee that  our pre-order campaign target will be reached at all, but at the very  least this reward will also include a limited print of our cover artwork  and your copy of Flintlock will be signed by Flintlock creator Steve  Tanner. The cover art print included here is the standard sized print,  not the A3 deluxe version which is also being offered as a separate  reward option.

Bookplate Edition – This one’s a bit special, as for just £25 it  offers all the content of the £15 pledge and also includes original  fully inked artwork by David Morris on a limited signed and numbered  exclusive bookplate. It’s a chance to own some original art of your favourite Flintlock character for a small premium. As such there’s only a  limited amount available. I introduced the bookplate reward in the Book Three campaign and they proved popular. and you can see what they  looked like in the photo below -it shows some of the  completed bookplates that were sent out to Book Three backers.

For this  campaign the bookplate layout will be the same, although the Book Five logo colours will be used instead and you’ll have a choice of which Flintlock character you want portrayed  on the bookplate you receive!

Deluxe Print – Produced just for this campaign, the first of two Flintlock Book  Five premium rewards is an oversized, 400 gsm print of the cover  artwork, without the logos and text, each one individually signed and  numbered by artist John M Burns. This really is something special, the chance to own a print of John’s artwork signed by him. This is NOT the smaller standard cover  art print that comes with the £15 reward, but that’s included too as  part of the reward content.

Original Cover Artwork – Yes, the original painted artwork for Book Five by John M Burns is also up for grabs as this campaign’s one-off super-premium reward. John is quite rightly considered one of the the all-time greats of British comics whose career began drawing various strips in the 1950s, so to have his art gracing our latest cover is quite something! This really is a very special reward, and a rare opportunity to own a very unique piece of art from a genuine master.

THE ADD ONS

There are multi-book options for you to catch up with all the Flintlock series if you’ve never enjoyed Flintlock before, and each of the books in the Flintlock series (including the colour specials) are also available singly through the add-on options. Hopefully this will allow anyone to mix and match as preferred. but do let me know if a particular combination you want isn’t listed and I’ll see what I can do.

 THE STRETCH GOALS

All unlocked stretch goals will all be included in the Printed Plus reward level (and any higher tiers that also include that reward content). However, the plan is to ensure that by campaign end EVERY backer receives an extra stretch goal reward for their support.

FIRST STRETCH GOAL UNLOCKED – The following artwork  by DEAN BEATTIE will be added as a second limited print to the £15  reward package as our Flintlock Book Five pre-order campaign reached  £1000:

SECOND STRETCH GOAL UNLOCKED – The following artwork  by CHRIS ASKHAM will be added as a third limited print to the £15  reward package as our Flintlock Book Five pre-order campaign reached  £1500:

THIRD STRETCH GOAL UNLOCKED – The following artwork  by CARLOS ANGELI will be added as a fourth limited print to the £15  reward package as our Flintlock Book Five pre-order campaign reached  £2800:

FOURTH STRETCH GOAL UNLOCKED – The following artwork  by ADAM JAKES will be added as a fifth limited print to the £15  reward package and sent to all backers (digital only backers will receive a digital copy) as our Flintlock Book Five pre-order campaign reached  £3400:

FIFTH STRETCH GOAL UNLOCKED – The following artwork  by DAVID MORRIS will be added as a sixth limited print to the £15  reward package as our Flintlock Book Five pre-order campaign reached  £4000:

SIXTH STRETCH GOAL REVEALED – The following artwork  by MICK TRIMBLE will be added as a seventh limited print to the £15  reward package and sent to all backers (digital only backers will receive a digital copy) if our Flintlock Book Five pre-order campaign reaches  £4600:

Finally I just want to remind you that as with our previous Flintlock  campaigns this is a pre-order opportunity rather than an all-or-nothing  plea for funding.  The book is being printed in  March regardless of this campaign’s success, but I’m using this campaign as an opportunity  to properly reward my Flintlock backers and give them some great extras  that wont be available elsewhere. Because of that my target is low –  just £500 – and almost all rewards include FREE postage for UK backers  and at cost shipping charges anywhere else. This also means that some of the heavier multi-book reward packages will be sent via international surface mail – this is slower than air mail by about 3 – 4 weeks, but does allow me to keep those international shipping costs as low as I can.

I hope you’ll consider supporting this campaign and come back with me  once again to the 18th Century with Flintlock to enjoy more unique  historical adventures.

Cheers!

Steve

Risks and challenges

This will be my fifteenth Kickstarter project – the previous fourteen were all successfully funded and delivered. All the artwork for Flintlock Book Five is finished and in-house, and no publishing delays are expected beyond any restrictions imposed by the global pandemic. This campaign is a worldwide pre-order opportunity to receive the book upon its release.
