Comic-Con International: San Diego Cancels In-Person 2021 Event; Comic-Con@Home To Continue

This was, of course, inevitable.

Comic-Con International announced Monday that its in-person event, scheduled for July of 2021, has been cancelled as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. CCI also cancelled the 2020 event for the same reasons. In a statement on their website, the organization said, “Never could we have imagined what the world experienced in 2020 and continues to experience today. While we are buoyed by the rollout of the vaccine and the growing number of individuals being inoculated, it appears that July will still be too early to safely hold an in-person event of the magnitude of Comic-Con.”

In lieu of an in-person event, Comic-Con@Home will occur again from July 23rd to the 25th. As readers will note, the event is one day less than last year’s Comic-Con@Home and the usual four days of a proper SDCC. CCI admits this is due to “limited financial resources,” but we imagine the growing sense of “Zoom fatigue” is also a factor.

The organization also plans to hold a smaller in-person event in November should the COVID situation improve, but further details are currently unavailable.

Badgeholders from 2020 who saw their tickets moved to 2021 will enjoy the same rollover for the 2022 show. CCI is also offering refunds to any badgeholders no longer interested in attending Comic-Con, whenever it resumes.

Sadly, as we suggested when the big comic conventions began to postpone and cancel last year, comic conventions will not be viable until New York Comic Con in October at the earliest. Even with the vaccine rollout, we are starting to believe large scale conventions will not happen again until, quite possibly, WonderCon 2022 in March of next year.

That show, meanwhile, is also planning a two-day “@home” event at the end of this month.
