It’s taken awhile, but it appears Ryan (Javicia Leslie) soon arrive on the island of Coryana. But as this preview for next week’s Batwoman indicates, she will still have to face ninja, Safiyah (Shivaani Ghai), and the truth about Kate Kane. Or is that truth meant more for Alice (Rachel Skarsten)?
Meanwhile, we hate to call this week a filler episode, but it definitely feels like a delaying tactic despite the things we learned about Alice. On that front, we now know Safiyah is at least partially to blame for Alice’s madness. A hypnotist called Enigma scrambled her brain so she would adopt a wilder persona and hunt for Kane-Hamilton family with added ferocity. Oh, she also forgot Ocean in the process. As far as villainous plots go, it’s clever. It also gives Safiyah the sort of heft she needs. We like the character even if we think this story is starting to drag on a little too long.
All that said, though, the episode majorly lacked for momentum or character development outside of Alice’s backstory. Sure, Ryan realized she can’t kill Alice, but it feels like we’ve been there already — an episode more directly confronting the One Rule would’ve been worthwhile. Mary (Nicole Kang) and Jacob (Dougray Scott) are still in the same place they were last episode. That would actually be fine if only one of the commented on Jacob’s reaction to Mary’s clinic. To have them both talk about felt like a waste of time. Luke (Camrus Johnson), meanwhile, is in desperate need of some development and this episode would’ve been a great time to do it. Oh, well. Hopefully next week will see the end of the Desert Rose story and a new villain can cause our cast of characters grief.
Batwoman airs Sundays on The CW.
