Pierce Brosnan To Play Dr. Fate In ‘Black Adam’ Film

The final member of Black Adam‘s Justice Society of America has been found.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, former 007 Pierce Brosnan will play Dr. Fate in the upcoming DC Films project from Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema. Created by Gardner Fox and Howard Sherman, the character first appeared in 1940’s More Fun Comics #55 as a nameless mystical defender. After a year, he was finally revealed to be Kent Nelson, the son of an archeologist who opens the tomb of Nabu the Wise and accidentally poisons his father during the dig. The reawakened Nabu, seeing Kent’s loss, teaches him the mystic arts over the next twenty years and conferring upon him a powerful helmet, amulet, and cloak. This being the 1940s, Kent chose to become a costumed mystery man and fight crime. He eventually helped found the JSA and continued to appear in comics over the next 80s years — although, the helmet of Nabu and the other totems would pass to other characters like Kent’s eventual wife, Inza Cramer, and grandnephew Khalid Nassour.

Brosnan will in fact play the Kent Nelson version of the character, suggesting the film may set up the legacy aspect of the JSA for future films. Also, we’re going to assume Brosnan will fill the antagonist role as Black Adam‘s title character, to be played by Dwayne Johnson, is one of DC’s most famous anti-heroes. Although, it is worth noting the character has been a member of the JSA from time to time. Other members of the team to be seen in the film include Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone.

Marwan Kenzari has also been cast, but his role is being kept a secret.

The film, to be directed by Jaume Collett-Serra, has been in some stage of development for over ten years with Johnson set to star. At one point, he got into the habit of saying the film will shoot “this summer” for quite a few years. The film was even supposed to shot last summer, but was delayed when Johnson contracted COVID-19. Currently, the film is expected to start shooting next month, but with all the delays the project has experienced, we’ll believe it when Johnson starts posting Instagram videos from the set. And even then, we might still be unsure.

Black Adam is not currently scheduled for release.
