Renée Elise Goldsberry is the latest actor to join the upcoming Disney+ series She-Hulk.
Deadline reports her character is being referred to as “Amelia” — a name we don’t immediately recall from the She-Hulk comics we’ve read, but we admit we haven’t read them all. Tatiana Maslany will star as Jennifer Walters, the New York attorney who ends up with Hulk-like powers when she receives a blood transfusion from her cousin, Bruce Banner. Mark Ruffalo will make at least one appearance as the Hulk, while Tim Roth will make a surprising return as the Abomination. The series will also feature Ginger Gonzaga as Jennifer’s “best friend.” Take your guess as to who that might be since Hellcat’s status a surprising question mark.
Developed by Rick and Morty‘s Jessica Gao — who also serves as showrunner — the program will follow the more comical tone of the 2014-2015 She-Hulk series by Charles Soule and Javier Pulido. That series saw Jennifer more as an lawyer than an Avengers; although some of the cases she took on still led to fisticuffs. Veteran It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia director Kat Coiro also serves as an executive producer and will helm several episodes, including the pilot.
But all of that leaves us wondering if that comic book’s supporting cast — which included Hellcat, witchy assistant Angie Huang, and the off-beat tenants of the Dumbo, Brooklyn office building Jennifer ends up in after she quits a high power Manhattan firm — will populate the show. There’s definitely room for these characters. It just remains to be see if Goldsberry or Gonzaga will play one of them.
She-Hulk is expected to debut late this year or early in 2022.
