Tripwire Reviews A Quiet Place Part II

The Sound Of Silence

Tripwire’s editor-in-chief Joel Meadows takes a look at A Quiet Place Part II, out now in cinemas…

A Quiet Place Part II

Director: John Krasinki
Stars: Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Cillian Murphy, Noah Jupe

Delayed by the coronavirus, A Quiet Place Part II is the sequel to 2018’s A Quiet Place. Picking up mostly where the first film ended, A Quiet Place Part II sees Evelyn Abbot (Blunt) and son Marcus (Jupe) and daughter Regan (Simmonds) still struggling to survive in a world controlled by monsters who respond to sound.

Without husband Lee (Krasinki), who didn’t survive the first film, the Abbott family are forced to encounter the outside world where it isn’t just the aural monsters who are a threat. We do get a short flashback reminding us of how the world became this way and then it jumps into the action. Bennett (Murphy) is introduced to us in this flashback sequence and joins forces with the family. Djimon Honsou is introduced here simply as a man on the island the Abbotts end up on.

A Quiet Place was a horror film with some impressive audience jumps and its sequel manages to ratchet up the drama once again.

We still aren’t certain where the monsters have come from but the journey here is a tense one with Evelyn and her children struggle to survive against not just the traditional monsters but a number of human ones too. Krasinki keeps the action moving well and Simmonds, returning as Evelyn’s deaf daughter, is excellent with real chemistry between her and her brother Marcus (Jupe). Blunt is decent and Murphy is always watchable.

It’s not a great film and it doesn’t move things along much from the first film except for the introduction of Murphy’s character. But it is a perfectly serviceable horror sequel with some well-handled monster action. The third film is fairly inevitable so let’s see if we get a change in direction and a little more background on the film’s main threat.
