The Jupiter’s Legacy cliffhanger will go unresolved on Netflix
Variety reports the streaming giant has released the cast from their contracts; a way of cancelling the show without actually saying it. And we get why. The series reportedly cost somewhere in the range of $200 million for its eight-episode season. Add to that the money Netflix spent buying Millarworld and you get a pretty costly investment for a program which failed to wow critics or generate much buzz among the comic book faithful on Twitter. With that sort of buy-in, we’re not surprised the streamer wants to avoid using the word “cancelled” until the last possible moment.
Bizarrely, though, the world of Jupiter’s Legacy will continue on the service as Mark Millar confirmed Netflix is going forward with a live action adaptation of Supercrooks. “I’ve always loved crime stories from Scorcese[sic] to Tarantino and super-villains are always the most fun part of any superhero story. To do something exclusively focused on the villains they fight just feels incredibly fresh as we explore what it’s like to be a bad guy in a world crawling with good guys who want to put you in jail,” Millar said in a statement. With the series set in the same world, Jupiter’s Legacy is now being re-framed as an anthology setting for some of Millar’s ideas.
“We’ve made the tough call of letting our incredible cast out of their show commitment as we continue to thoughtfully develop all realms of the Jupiter’s Legacy saga,” Millar added. “We’re confident we’ll return to it later and just want to say thanks to you guys for your continued support and to the cast and crew who made this look so great.”
Although we enjoyed the series overall, we totally understand the criticisms of it and the decision to cut it short. In hindsight, we wonder if getting to the book’s first major shock would’ve positioned it better among a busy Spring 2021 of superhero shows, which included The Boys and Invincible, covering similar topics. That key moment, which pivots the story away from the material presented in the first season, would’ve been a much talked about thing online.
But sometimes comic book adaptations have to falter, and it seems the hand of fate chose Jupiter’s Legacy to be one of those less successful projects.
