After what feels like a decade of development, the television adaptation of Y: The Last Man is finally set to debut September 13th on FX on Hulu. Based on the Vertigo series by Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra, Ben Schnetzer stars as Yorick Brown, the last human alive with the Y-chromosome. With the aid of a government agent and a researcher, Yorick travels the remains of the United States after an attack wipes out everyone else with the chromosome. Diane Lane also stars as Yorick’s mother, Senator Jennifer Brown, with other cast members including Amber Tamblyn as Kimberly Cunningham, Marin Ireland as Nora Brady, Diana Bang as Dr. Allison Mann, Elliot Fletcher as Sam Jordan, Juliana Canfield as Beth Deville, Ashley Romans as Agent 355, and Olivia Thirlby as Hero Brown.
As you may recall, FX previously commissioned a Y pilot from showrunners Aida Mashaka Croal and Micheal Green with star Barry Koeghan. Sometimes after it was filmed, Croal and Green left the project with Koeghan also departing the series soon afterward. Eventually, new showrunner Eliza Clark cast Schnetzer to star and the cable outlet planned to resume production. Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed those plans a little, but filming finally began in October of last year. And according to various reports, the live monkey who played Yorick’s pet Ampersand in the original pilot will be replaced by computer graphics.
It is interesting to see the show shift from a planned broadcast on FX to becoming a FX on Hulu exclusive. It is probably better positioned on a streamer, especially as FX is the last vestige of the Fox name at Disney and, likely, due for a change sometime soon. At the same time, if it is anywhere as good as previous FX on Hulu original Devs, it can be broadcast anywhere in the Disney system and we’ll still find it.
