Jessica Drew is getting into the Spider-Verse.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Insecure‘s Issa Rae will voice the animated version of Jessica — aka Spider-Woman — in the upcoming Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel. Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld are onboard to reprise their roles as Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy. It is unclear if other performers, like Nicolas Cage and John Mulaney, will return as their quirky Spider-People from different realities. The first film saw the mutliverse crack open just as Miles first obtains his spider powers. Trained, after a fashion, by a down-on-his luck version of Peter Parker (Jake Johnson), Miles eventually helps the group defeat the Kingpin (Liev Schreiber), who opened a rift in reality for his own ends.
Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson are currently directing the animated feature from a script by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham. It is unclear if it will see the multiverse under threat again, but we hope the Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) glimpsed in the first film’s mid-credit stinger joins Miles, Jessica, and Gwen on this new adventure.
The as-yet untitled Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel is set to open on October 7th, 2022.
