Infectious Imagination: ‘Dimensional Flats’ Reviewed

“A mutant doctor uses a special ray gun to treat dying patients. One day, he ends up caught in another dimensional world –the embodiment of a rare disease. His friends race to save his life using extraordinary measures.”

Dimensional Flats by Tetsunori Tawaraya is a bizarre medical thriller about a seahorse with a catfish for a gun and his friends Cobra and Meatball-bat. The H.R. Giger-esque artwork is presented in high contrast silver ink on black paper.

I wouldn’t recommend Dimensional Flats to casual comic readers. This is for people who like underground comix and want to have their brains rewired. Because Dimensional Flats is an avant-garde comic, I won’t be doing the usual numerical rating – it’s weird out of 10.

Dimensional Flats breaks a lot of rules in a traditional narrative and I’m sure there will be many people who won’t get it or won’t like it. However, Dimensional Flats is so unapologetically “out there” that I couldn’t stop thinking about the comic. I guess Tawaraya‘s Disease World has infected my imagination.

Dimensional Flats is now available from Hollow Press.
