Warner Bros. Brings Middle-Earth Back In ‘The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim’ Animated Feature

The Rohirrim will soon ride out again.

Polygon reports Warner Bros. and New Line are fast-tracking The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, an animated feature to be directed by Kenji Kamiyama. The story will focus on Helm Hammerhand, the ninth king of Rohan, who resisted an invasion from Dunland during a winter siege at a fortress which will come to be known later in the Third Age as Helm’s deep. Joseph Chou, Jeffrey Addiss, and Will Matthews will co-write the screenplay with The Lord of Rings co-screenwriter Philippa Boyens consulting. Indeed, there will also be an attempt to make the film visually connect to the world Boyens, Fran Walsh, and Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson devised in the original film trilogy. Considering how prominently Helm’s Deep featured in The Two Towers, it only makes sense for the keep and the armor of the Rohirrim to maintain the look of the Jackson films. At this point, though, Jackson and Walsh are not involved in the project.

Keeping The Lord of the Rings alive will likely be a key goal for Warner Bros. going into its Discovery future. Luckily, there are plenty of stories to tell in the Third Age while Amazon tells a Second Age story with its own upcoming Lord of the Rings television series. It almost makes one wonder if the companies are currently trying to gain access to the First Age lore from the J.R.R. Tolkien estate…

As with all new project announcements, it is unclear how swiftly The War of the Rohirrim will make it to theaters. Even if it is fast-tracked, its animated nature means it will be at least three years before we can experience Helm Hammerhand’s story.
