Check Out Frank Frazetta’s Buck Rogers Portfolio From 1975

It’s Out Of This World

Thanks tom our friends over at Heavy Metal Magazine, they have just reminded us of this amazing Frank Frazetta portfolio form back in 1975…

Frank Frazetta is most famous as a painter of fantasy art, because he is arguably the greatest of all time. For the first decade-plus of his career, he worked in comics — drawing, not painting. His work was somewhat scattered; a story here, a story there. He did daily newspaper strips and romance comics and funny animal comics. Sometimes he was inking more established artists.

From this era, there’s really just one substantial, sustained showcase by Frank Frazetta that clearly foreshadows the artist he would become. It’s the run of eight covers of the anthology series Famous Funnies featuring scenes from Buck Rogers, originally published in 1953 and ’54.

In 1975, these drawings were collected in a portfolio, coloured by Frank Frazetta himself, published by Russ Cochran. Below is the text of the original insert:

Frank Frazetta was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1928. His formal art training started at the age of eight at the Brooklyn Academy of Fine Arts.

Like many other fine artists and illustrators of today, he obtained his first professional experience drawing for the comic books of the mid-1940s through the mid-1950s. During this time he did everything from backgrounds and lettering to complete stories and covers.

In 1953 and 1954, while working as an assistant to Al Capp, Frazetta drew a series of eight covers for use on FAMOUS FUNNIES comics #209 through #216. These eight covers, all featuring the character Buck Rogers, have made these issues valuable collector’s items.

This portfolio of these eight covers was reproduced from the eight original drawings, with the colours added by Frazetta. They represent some of the finest artwork ever done for the comics medium.
