Why Do Cinemas Implement Loyalty Programs?

All industries are competitive, which means maintaining an influx of customers is essential to a business’s survival. With new businesses emerging left and right, it’s not just about how good your services are, but also about how you go about gaining new customers and retaining existing ones.

Cinemas have long understood this, realising they can’t just rely on Marvel annually releasing a new adventure/superhero movie. Plus, not every theatre shows the same films. Theatres have to implement exciting ways to keep consumers walking through their doors, and one way is offering customer loyalty programmes.

How Do They Work?

Traditional loyalty programmes allow moviegoers to use their rewards cards when buying tickets, as well as beverages and snacks. With every purchase, these customers earn points, which they can then spend at the theatre, allowing them to receive discounts and free tickets. Knowing that an individual may get a reward from attending a theatre/movie can be enough to influence them to go, even if the films playing are not their usual cup of tea. From a business and revenue standpoint, these programmes help to ensure customer loyalty and satisfaction.

Every Industry Uses Loyalty Programs

Loyalty and rewards programs are widespread. In 2019, there were 2.6 billion loyalty programs in the United States alone. Most programs have been established for the same reasons movie theatres have them. Competition is fierce, so it’s not just about how good your products and services are but also how you attract and grow your consumer base.

Loyalty programs are a great way to counter this, as the idea of receiving a reward might be enough to make an individual forget or not care about whether the movie was good or bad.
