‘Loki’ Director Kate Herron Departs Series

Although Disney+’s Loki will be the first Marvel Studios series to feature a second season, one of its key creative partners will not return for the sophomore run.

Executive Producer and director Kate Heron told Deadline on Friday that her commitment to the series was for the one season only. “I’m really happy to watch it as a fan next season, but I just think I’m proud of what we did here and I’ve given it my all,” she said. “I’m working on some other stuff yet to be announced.” Her comments also suggest the second season was something of a late decision despite the finale clearly being devised with a continuation in mind.

Speculation is running rampant, of course, on the “real” reason for her departure, including a handful of conspiracy theories. We’re inclined to believe her stated reason — working on her own projects — mixed with what is no doubt extreme exhaustion from directing all six episodes within Marvel’s strictures and doing months of promotion for the program. From the outside, it is impossible to know what toll those stresses can take on a person.

There was some worry in certain circles that Marvel’s seeming choice to make the television shows a director’s showcase format would lead to a de-emphasis on the writer as the paramount creative force, but Herron’s departure may signal a single series director is not a tenable thing for multi-season television. At least in the Marvel method, anyway. Indeed, most television shows employ a team of directors for a number of practical reasons including the prevention of burnout.

In fact, upcoming Marvel Studios series like Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight will employ more than one director, a departure from the format established in the initial three programs. Perhaps the signs of fatigue within that first group of directors forced a course correction.

In any event, Loki will return.
