‘The Batman’ To Also Spin Off The Penguin In HBO Max Series

The world of The Batman continues to expand on HBO Max.

According to The Hollywood ReporterColin Farrell has been “approached” to reprise his The Batman role as The Penguin in an in-development television series for the Warner streaming service. Film director Matt Reeves and producer Dylan Clark are said to be onboard as executive producers while Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. veteran Lauren LeFranc is set to write the pilot. The potential series will chart the rise of Oswald Cobblepot in the Gotham City underworld many years before Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) arrives on the scene as The Batman. The premise will definitely feel familiar as it was one of the stories told in the Fox television series Gotham. That program’s other focus, the Gotham City Police, will also be examined in another spinoff from the upcoming film. Referred to as “Gotham Central” in some circles, the series received a straight-to-series order last year, but lost showrunner Terrence Winter last November. Joe Barton replaced him in January of 2021.

And thanks to the DC Multiverse, the two Batman projects will exist in their own shared reality away from the other DC-based HBO Max programs like Green Lantern and the already-streaming Titans and Doom Patrol, to say nothing of the CW’s two fictional DC worlds, Earth-Prime and Earth-2. All of these are also distinct from Peacemaker, the show directly tied to The Suicide Squad and, seemingly, the DC Film universe initiated in Man of Steel.

Of course, it remains to be seen if all the piece will fall into place for The Penguin project. If Farrell decides not to be part of a prestige television project, the pilot could feature a much younger version of Cobblepot or, perhaps, molt into something else entirely.
