No.66 Matt Wagner

Matt Wagner is a comic artist and writer who began his career in the early 1980s at indie company Comico. He made his name thanks to his creator-owned books Grendel and Mage… Words: Joel Meadows

His work on these two books got him noticed by DC where he drew an issue of its acclaimed Sandman series. Wagner wrote and drew a Demon miniseries featuring Jack Kirby’s creation. He then went on to co-write Vertigo’s long-running Sandman Mystery Theatre. Wagner also teamed up Grendel with Batman in two acclaimed crossover series.

Wagner also wrote and drew Batman/ Superman/ Wonder Woman: Trinity a limited series at DC featuring their most iconic characters.

Wagner has returned to Mage to complete his trilogy featuring his Arthurian creation Kevin Matchstick. He has also gone back to Grendel over the years most recently with Grendel’s Odyssey coloured by his son Brennan.

His CV also includes work as writer on DC’s Madame Xanadu series, work on Batman: Legends Of The Dark Knight and a long run of covers for DC’s Green Arrow series. Wagner has also written The Shadow and The Spirit for Dynamite Entertainment.

Wagner’s work is influenced by German expressionist cinema as well as Jack Kirby, Alex Toth and the art and culture of Japan and Art Nouveau. His work is always dynamic and his storytelling is always clear and easy to follow. He is a classic comic artist in every sense and he is as accomplished a writer as he is an artist
