Ridley Scott Claims ‘Blade Runner’ Series Is In The Works

So many episodes … lost like tears in rain.

Variety reports a Blade Runner television series is in the works. Their source: the original film’s director, Ridley Scott. Early Monday, Scott appeared on the BBC in support of his recent film, House of Gucci, and mentioned television series for both Alien and Blade Runner are in development. Alien first came to light last December, with Legion‘s Noah Hawley developing the series for Hulu and Disney (Alien‘s new owner).

Blade Runner, though, comes as more of a surprise. According to Scott, his team has “written the pilot for Blade Runner and the bible. So, we’re already presenting Blade Runner as a TV show, the first 10 hours.” As the director is famously imprecise with his words, it is unclear if the series will retell the story of the film, expand into other ideas from Phillip K. Dick‘s novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, or continue on from Denis Villeneuve‘s sequel, Blade Runner 2049. To an extent, the world is limitless, with plenty of hooks for more stories. Indeed, Blade Runner produced a number of anime shorts in connection with 2049 and the recent Blade Runner: Black Lotus.

Although, we have to admit, it is surprising to see Blade Runner continue in this fashion as the box office performance of both films were less than hoped for by Warner Bros. The first film became a money maker in the video store and cable era, where 2049 was seemingly swallowed in the endless IP pit. Of course, WarnerMedia seems to mine mithril from that pit, so this may explain why further Blade Runner is on the horizon.

Since Scott offered few other details about the project, it may still turn out to be vaporware, like that Gladiator sequel he still toys with from time to time.
