The second episode of Obi Wan Kenobi carries on the same themes as the first. The show follows a very different Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) than the one fans are used to. He is neither an old mentor nor a young warrior. He’s stuck somewhere in the middle. Obi-Wan has lost his way and is struggling to find it again. Now fans get to see what that actually looks like in practice as the Inquisitors are hot on his tail. But where this episode really shines is getting to see the blooming relationship between Obi-Wan and Leia (Vivien Lyra Blair).
It’s never been fully revealed how Leia knows about Obi-Wan and where he’s hiding at the start of Star Wars: A New Hope. It was assumed that perhaps her father had told her stories about him and that’s why she was reaching out to him for help. But this show is revealing a deeper connection in their relationship. The banter back and forth is cute as the two get to know each other and Leia comes to view the ageing Jedi as someone she can trust.
Furthermore, the episode also offers a bit of a surprise with an unexpected death. Prequels are a bit frustrating in that fans can pretty much tell who is going to live and who is going to die when the stories and characters are so well known. So when a character you expect to survive meets a surprising end it does provide a refreshing bit of originality to the show. With the episode’s closing scene revealing what’s to come it’s not that hard to assume fans haven’t seen the best of what the show has to offer. But between Obi-Wan, Leia, and the Inquisitors chasing them down, this is still on track to be a successful addition to the Star Wars universe that fans can rally behind.
