‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Finishes Strong To Defy Critics

While the outcome of Obi-Wan Kenobi was never in doubt, there was always some fan skepticism as to how the show would get there. Questions arose on whether or not it would ruin canon or stray too far from the original characters, or change the Star Wars mythos regardless. Fans always searching for a reason to complain will always find one. But for those who enjoy the sci-fi epic for what it is and long for some nostalgia, Obi-Wan Kenobi is a memorable ride and a worthy addition to the Star Wars catalog.

The story itself is relatively simple in it’s execution. Inquisitors, whose job it is to find the remaining Jedi, create a scheme to lure Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) out of hiding by kidnapping Princess Leia Organa (Vivien Lyra Blair). That alone as a premise should be enough to get fans interested. But the show’s creators knew they had to step carefully, otherwise Star Wars canon would be in jeopardy. So they wisely decided to introduce a new character, Reva (Moses Ingram), who had her own arc that took a similar, yet different path when compared to Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen). And then there’s Princess Leia herself, a character whose childhood is vastly under-reported. This show will serve as a vital source that expands upon her character.

In the end, Reva was an interesting character and a nice addition to the Star Wars stable. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was more including her in the future. And those complaining that Obi-Wan and Darth Vader never got the worthy showdown they deserved early on in the show spoke too soon. Obi-Wan Kenobi rallies and the climax of the show was an emotional showcase that has real repercussions for the relationship these characters share. Not to mention the character work that was done between princess Leia and Obi-Wan will also resonate throughout the Original Trilogy.
