Reva: A True Character Of ‘Star Wars’

Now that Obi-Wan Kenobi is over, it’s time for fans to digest the story and characters as a whole and sort out their feelings about its reception. One of the most polarizing elements of the show is the new character Reva (Moses Ingram). Many critics of Reva like to cite poor writing and characterization for their dislike of her. And it’s easy to come to that conclusion when viewing the episodes individually. But when her entire journey is viewed from beginning to end, a picture starts to form of just how important Reva is as a symbol of the Star Wars mythology as a whole.

Like so many characters in Star Wars, Reva’s journey starts from the beginning as a child. She was taken from her family as a youngling to be trained by the Jedi Order. Right from the start, Reva grew a bit of resentment from this. Then, as she was growing accustomed to her new life at the Jedi Temple, her world was once again uprooted by Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) when he slaughtered her friends and new family right in front of her. This trauma cannot be overlooked, especially when she went on to join Anakin Skywalker’s new Empire as an Inquisitor who hunted down the very same people she was expected to spend her life alongside. All the while, Reva kept hatred and anger in her heart for what Anakin did, biding time to enact revenge.

The truth of the matter is that Reva is a broken human being. One trauma after the next has left her world in shambles and her spirit so twisted that she doesn’t even truly know who she is as a person. This all culminates when she decides to spare Luke Skywalker’s life. Critics have noted these conflicting actions as poor characterization, but they completely miss the fact that she’s just broken. She has been so out of touch with her feelings and emotions that it’s impossible for her to sort through them all and formulate some resemblance of a decent human being. Her tragedy isn’t just one of the Empire’s making, but the Jedi Order’s as well. It’s a complete look at what everything that happens in the Star Wars universe can do to an individual, and in that regard, she might be the most pure Star Wars character of all.
