At long last, The Flash is ending its run.
Deadline reports the program’s ninth season will be its last. The 13-episode season will debut in 2023. The confirmation is not without some surprise. Grant Gustin initially agreed to return for ten episodes (which apparently extended to 15 episodes per Deadline) with co-star Candice Patton eventually signing up to return as well as Barry’s lighting rod, Iris West-Allen. Danielle Panabaker will also return as Dr. Caitlin Snow, but the trio represent the only original cast members to remain with the program throughout its nine season. The departure of Jesse L. Martin was announced via his decision to star in a new NBC drama pilot while other original cast members like Carlos Valdes, Rick Cosnett, and Tom Cavanagh all left at various times in the past — although the latter’s constant guest appearances as the Reverse-Flash sure make it seems like he never really left. Martin, meanwhile, is expected to return for at least five episodes.
It is currently unclear if current cast members Danielle Nicolet, Brandon McKnight, and Kayla Compton will also return, but that seems likely.
Presumably, the story will consistent of one “graphic novel,” as showrunner Eric Wallace likes to dub his storylines. We also imagine it will tell the last story the show has left to tell: the first Reverse-Flash story.
