Dopamine is the thing we’re always striving for. The happiness chemical is the driving force behind everything, literally, as its use is linked to motivation. If you’re not doing something to feel good, the feel-good chemical will make you do the thing. But why is dopamine so important? And if we’re running low, how do we get more? What does dopamine do?
Things like online slot videos, movies, comics, etc., all bring us a sense of excitement that will donate to our dopamine supply. As do getting really deep into these things. Whether that’s analysis, reading fanfic, lore, etc., it all pays into our dopamine supply.
Dopamine is a naturally occurring chemical messenger in the brain, and it has many functions. It prompts motivations, rewards yourself, improves memory, and regulates body movements. But commonly, it’s known for being a chemical that makes you feel happy.
On the other end, low levels of dopamine in the brain have been linked to lessened motivation and decreased enthusiasm.
Where can you get dopamine?
There are a lot of ways to naturally promote the creation of dopamine in your system. The first of which is the most fun: doing more of what you love. Whether that’s geeking out over movies, geeking out over comics, diving deep into your favorite characters or IPs, watching your favourite YouTubers or videos, etc., do it to give yourself a little boost. If you’re someone who loves music, you’re in luck because music, in particular, has been known to release dopamine in the brain, as much as 9%, and it’s fun.
Of course, dopamine is important in motivation, which might be necessary to prompt some of these, but if you force yourself into it, to begin with, the dopamine should follow, and you’ll soon find yourself enjoying yourself.
You can also gain more dopamine from what you eat. If you add a lot of protein to your diet, for instance, you can get more of the amino acids that are vital to dopamine production. On the other hand, you might want to lower the amount of saturated fats you consume, as they disrupt dopamine signaling to the brain. So, the dopamine is there, but it’s not getting to where it needs to be effective.
You can also take some probiotics to promote dopamine. This is because your gut has species of bacteria that can produce dopamine and better get it to the brain. And you can get supplements on the building blocks of dopamine, like iron, folate, niacin, and Vitamin B6.
Exercise is also a common means of improving your mood. As little as 10 minutes of aerobic activity can make you feel happier. This isn’t entirely due to dopamine. It’s more to do with boosting endorphin levels, but research suggests that exercise can cause your dopamine levels to rise in the brain too.
There are even more ways, like getting enough sleep, getting enough sunlight, and meditating, that will boost your dopamine levels too.
