The Progenitor has rendered judgment. The earth has failed. This is what happens next. AXE: Judgment Day #5 continues Marvel’s best event yet.
Kieron Gillen, Valerio Schiti, Marte Gracia and Clayton Cowles tell the tale of Earth’s last stand.
Earth is burning. The Progenitor has lit the fire. Now humanity’s only hope is for the Avengers, X-Men and Eternals to band together to save the planet. It’s a losing battle, and they have no hope… That’s when they work best.
Gillen shows what happens when the world’s greatest heroes are at their most desperate. When I say there’s no hope, I mean it- many of the greatest heroes in the world die gruesome deaths. It’s a story about impossible odds and heroism in spite of it. Even better, it features an incredible, awe-inspiring final page that might be the best moment of any Marvel event yet.
Schiti and Gracia make it look great. It’s hard to keep talking about how good they are. This issue forces them to depict some gruesome and depressing images, but they pace them in a way that builds up what Gillen is doing with the heroes rallying towards victory. Gracia in particular is a standout with his work.
He sets the tone of desperation with the deep shades of red that sweep through the pages. With each violent burst of death from the Progenitor, a moment of calm follows, not to reassure us but to allow the horror of what we’re seeing sink in. WIthout these colors, the issue would be half as effective, and that shows the power of good colors in a comic.
I loved this book, and I’m excited to see how it ends. There’s no hope. In that, there is promise.
