‘The Sandman’ Reportedly Renewed For A Second Season

Get ready for a season (or so) of mists.

Deadline reports Netflix has finally renewed The Sandman for a second year. The program, based on the comic book series by writer Neil Gaiman and artists as varied as Sam Keith, Colleen Doran, and Marc Hempel, was a strong performer on the platform following its August debut. Nevertheless, its future remained up in the air with Gaiman taking to Twitter and encouraging fans to watch the first season multiple times. Like the comic’s early issues, the series tells the tale of Morpheus (Tom Sturridge), also known as Dream, the personification of dreams who rules a kingdom of wonders and nightmares. But when he is captured by a would-be magician at the start of the 20th Century, it sets off a series of events the Dreamking must investigate when he escapes a hundred years later. The program also adapted the comic series’ second major story line, “The Doll’s House,” and a handful of shorter tales via its sixth episode and a bonus 11th episode added to the program two weeks after it debuted.

Presuming the same model, the second season will likely adapt the next two major stories — “Season of Mists” and “A Game of You” — and one or two shorter tales like “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The later was virtually promised by Gaiman in the wake of the bonus episode.

As Deadline reports, the status of the series was in question over the last few days as some sites and Twitter accounts pronounced it cancelled while the DC Comics Twitter account declared (in a since-deleted tweet) that the program would return. Deadline’s seeming confirmation of a proper future is a relief for those hoping the show, with its exceptional quality, would continue.

Of course, when it will return is anyone’s guess. But assume, like the other prestige fantasy shows of 2022, a two-year wait for the next chapters of the series.
