American Horror Story is certainly known for its twist and turns. It has to have them when spreading out a whole season of horror across multiple characters and plot lines. And after having characters operate on separate tracks and only interacting briefly throughout the current tale, this episode is where a lot of threads start to come together and merge from an unexpected twist that made this week’s second episode one of the best of the season thus far.
It started with Gino(Joe Mantello) and Patrick (Russell Tovey) finally interacting with Hannah (Billie Lourd). So far, Hannah had been on her own in regards the mysterious virus plaguing the city. Gino and Patrick meeting with her means that plotline might be brought into the limelight soon. But the main plot of this week’s episode centered on the fact that Patrick and Sam (Zachary Quinto) have a secret history involving a young man who accidentally died during a sex party. While trying to cover up the crime, Patrick made a connection between the young man’s death and the Mai Tai killer.
Besides the extended sex scene for shock value, the episode was quite entertaining and revealing from both a plot and character standpoint. It revealed that a lot of the characters have histories that make them intrinsically linked. By extension, the plots are intrinsically linked as well. It’s also demonstrated that the characters have essentially known all along who the killer was. They were just unable to piece it all together. The only strange bit about this is that Patrick saw the killer before in the hospital and was unable to make the connection. Then again, not recognizing someone from a brief encounter years ago is not that big of a stretch. Regardless, it’s certainly set up the rest of the season for more tension and suspense.
