Thoughts On The Movie: Casino (1995)

Gambling With His Life

The Martin Scorsese movie Casino, released in 1995 and starring Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, is a crime drama. The story focuses on Sam “Ace” Rothstein (De Niro), who builds his casino empire and falls victim to an FBI investigation after being betrayed by his friend, Nicky Santoro (Pesci). Casino the movie is one of the best movies about Las Vegas and is generally considered a classic…

This Casino movie was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture but lost to Braveheart (1995). Sharon Stone won an Oscar for her performance in Casino. The movie is an adaptation of the book Casino, written by Nicholas Pileggi.

The book tells the true story of Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal’s time as a casino manager in Las Vegas during the 1970s and 1980s. Before casino games NetBet, for instance – the modern online  casino – became popular, people would play games at brick-and-mortar casinos.

Sam’s Rise to Power and Subsequent Downfall

The movie tells the story of Sam’s rise to power and subsequent downfall while focusing on mob life and family issues. Sam (Robert De Niro) is a gambler who is given control over the running of the Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas. Sam gets involved with the mob and is at risk of losing everything.

Sam’s Friend: Joe Pesci

It also features Joe Pesci as Sam’s friend, Nicky Santoro, who works for Sam but eventually becomes a danger to him. Pesci does an excellent job of portraying this character’s wrong side and gives an interesting perspective on how someone can be loyal to someone even when it hurts them.

It’s especially true in the scene where he talks about how much he hates the “eye-talians.” It causes him problems later in that scene when he fights with Frankie (De Niro) over some stolen casino money that he was supposed to get back without any consequences.

The Writer: Nicholas Pileggi

The original script was written by Nicholas Pileggi, who later wrote Goodfellas with Martin Scorsese. What we found interesting about Casino is that it takes place in Las Vegas but doesn’t feel like a film about Las Vegas. The movie opens with Sam “Ace” Rothstein walking into his office one morning and finding out that there’s been a murder at his casino; this is all because he refused to pay the mafia for protection.

Movie Awards

The movie was nominated for an Academy Award and won an Oscar for Best Picture for Sharon Stone’s performance. If you’re a movie buff, you’ve likely seen Casino. It also won several other awards, including one at the Golden Globes. It’s worth watching this film if you haven’t seen it, as it’s a classic people enjoy.

Final Thoughts About the Movie Casino

Casino is a great movie; the story is interesting, and the acting is good, with some nice shots of Las Vegas. Casino is not a film for everyone. It’s lengthy and does not have a happy ending. If you’re a fan of mob movies and gambling-themed films, then this movie is one that you should add to your watch list.
