Which The Walking Dead Spinoff Is Set To Come First?

Return To The World Of TWD

The Walking Dead aired for 11 seasons and 177 episodes, making it one of the longest-running series of all time. It was a cultural revelation and provided a vast number of new ideas about how a zombie apocalypse could play out. The flagship series recently ended, but AMC Studios doesn’t want to stop making content in this universe. There are various spinoffs planned, and there could be more to follow…

All Three Announced for 2023

The Walking Dead served up a few characters that viewers grew attached to, and there’s no doubt that a lot of people will want to see more of them in future content. That’s why AMC Studios announced that there would be a spinoff featuring Daryl Dixon early on. Norman Reedus was set to appear alongside Melissa McBride in that one, but the actor who played Carol Peletier in the main series pulled out. Now, it will just feature Daryl on his own as he embarks on a new adventure. It’s set to take place in Europe, and teaser posters for it have stated that it will be out in 2023.

The most recent announcement was that Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira will reprise their roles as Rick and Michonne respectively, in another spinoff. Rick was taken away by a helicopter to a mysterious location in the main series, and Michonne went looking for him. This long-awaited series should fill in the gaps for viewers and is also slated for a 2023 release.

The series that appears to be furthest forward in its development is the Maggie and Negan spinoff, with Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the starring roles. Numerous images for Dead City have already been released showing filming locations, so there’s a good chance that this one could drop first of all the spinoffs.

Set to Expand the Universe Further

The influence of The Walking Dead is plain to see across popular culture and the wider entertainment industry, as the AMC series managed to bring zombies back into the mainstream. Now, undead content can be found everywhere, and there have been numerous series and movies released since the Frank Darabont-developed series started its 11-season run.

The gaming industry is one of the best places to see the influence of this ground-breaking series. Along with official Walking Dead themed titles like the Telltale Games series, there are others that clearly take inspiration from The Walking Dead. Days Gone on consoles, for example, depicts a similar apocalyptic world in which players take control of a character that looks and acts a bit like fan favourite Daryl.

The slots market is a great place to see how popular zombies have become in gaming, with online casinos featuring titles like Wild Walker. This game uses slow-moving zombies like the ones found in The Walking Dead, and the artwork on the thumbnail is reminiscent of the AMC series. As the Walking Dead universe is set to expand even further, there are likely to be even more games that draw from this world in their themes.

These spinoffs have the potential to last many years themselves, but they may not be the only ones that viewers are treated to. The Walking Dead had many other beloved characters that were still alive when the series finished. There’s a strong chance that some of their stories will be explored further in the future.
