Commentary: Should Riot Games Make A Dating Sim?

Riot Forge is a sub-label of Riot Games that partners with smaller studios to make games within the League of Legends universe that explore new genres; they’ve already announced a trio of titles true to that mission. The Arcane animated series exposed a whole new audience to League’s lovable characters — and the fact that many of them are kinda thirsty.

Could the League of Legends champions work within a dating simulation video game? Dating simulators gained popularity during the 2010s, right around the same time League was picking up steam. Dating Sims are video games with romantic elements and a focus on dialog-interactions. The ultimate goal: building relationships with other characters. Dating Sims often combine romance with genres like horror and fantasy. Noteworthy examples include the Persona series, Hatoful Boyfriend, and Doki Doki Literature Club.

The world of Runeterra has plenty of fantasy, horror, humor, and appealing characters. Therefore, I believe Riot Forge could develop a great romance game. Dead By Daylight already has a dating simulator, so why not League of Legends? Riot Forge could even partner with Team Salvato, who created the mega-hit Doki Doki Literature Club.

The developers at Riot are clearly big fans of anime and pop-culture, and are committed to respecting their players and characters. Riot Forge could create a humorous Dating Sim with some horror elements that would fit within the flexible tone of League and excite a passionate new audience.
