Dynamite’s exploration of Disney villains continues this May with Maleficent.
The company announced Thursday that writer and artist Soo Lee will helm Disney Villains: Maleficent, the second series in its Disney Villains line. Debuting in 1959’s Sleeping Beauty, the character’s singular look inspired characters on Once Upon a Time and a movie duology starring Angelina Jolie. According to Dynamite, “Queen of the Forbidden Mountain, Maleficent’s realm is shrouded in darkness and her soul is cold following a life of thwarting foolish adventurers after her powers. It’s only a matter of time until she will finally have enough, and descend upon the powerless people below, unleashing her horrible magics upon them.”
Set many years before Sleep Beauty, the story will focus squarely on the queen and her wicked ways. In a statement, Lee said, “I think Maleficent is kind of an icon as a character herself … She is stylish, beautiful in her way and very powerful. Even though she’s a villain I really liked that she was a powerful woman. I mean, she transforms into a dragon! That’s pretty cool.”
Joining Lee on letters is Jeff Eckleberry while Jae Lee, Jennifer L. Meyer, Rebeca Puebla, and Erica D’Urso join her on covers.
