Avatar Studios is a production company launched by Nickelodeon, with Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino as co-chief creative officers. The studio will produce brand new material set in the Avatar universe, including new series, short-form content, spin-offs, and theatrical films.
In the video, Konietzko summarizes the history of Avatar’s creation and speaks very candidly about the show’s unique place in animation. Back in 2005, a high fantasy animated series with long-form continuity was unheard of for television. But times have changed and the broad popularity of anime has proven that audiences young and old are ready for more narratively driven animated series.
There are three films planned for the expansion of the Avatar Universe to be animated by Flying Bark Productions (Moon girl and Devil Dinosaur, Rise of the TMNT) and will utilize 2D and 3D compositing. As someone who grew up on Avatar and The Legend of Korra– I have full confidence in Konietzko and DiMartino’s bold new direction. The Avatar series raised the bar in terms of narratively driven animated television, morally complex characters, and organic diversity within the fantasy genre. I look forward to seeing what walls they will break through next!
