Yet another comic to get behind on Kickstarter, another from Roger Gibson, writer of Harker and Gravestown, it’s time to meet Mad Girl.
(Mad Girl’s main cover – cover A – by Vincent Danks)
Mad Girl is the latest project from Gibson, writer of one of the best crime procedurals you’ll read, Harker, as well as the fantasy Gravestown. So pretty much just on the quality of previous works, this one’s one you’ll be wanting to back!
Described by Gibson as “sexy nonsense combined with witty and intelligent fun for all,” Mad Girl’s something very different from either Harker or Gravestown, it’s, according to the Kickstarter and Gibson, “a cross between Nick Fury’s S.H.I.E.L.D., the British TV Avengers, Wacky Races, Dan Dare, Barbarella and Doctor Who,” set in a “psychedelic, groovy modern world.”
Mad Girl # 1 cover B by Andrew Richmond
Mad Girl follows the exploits and adventures of Lee Steiner, Britain’s finest and most ruthless secret agent. Lee’s adventures take her wherever the danger is, “wearing a skimpy costume and taking no nonsense,” and “having adventures up against aliens, mad scientists, wizards, time travellers, fish men from space and anyone mean or cruel.” The first issue promises “horrific squidgy aliens” and “the HQ of SMOOSH, an exclusive girl’s school bent on terror!”
Anyway, from all that and the artwork you can see, I get the idea this one’s going to be way sillier than Harker or Gravestown, a little camp, a little risque, and rather a lot of fun. We’ll see just how good it’s going to be when the Kickstarter ends.

Mad Girl #1 is the first of an ongoing series, written by Gibson and with art on the main 24-page story by Andrew Richmond, with further art contributions from Mark Wayne Barrett and Gibson.
You’ll also find a six-page Mad Girl backup strip drawn by Gabrielle Noble in the first issue, a page of which is shown below. As well as all that, the first issue has a four-page full-colour cutaway map/comic of Street Fleet (Lee’s HQ) drawn by Barrett.

In terms of Kickstarter tiers and rewards, there’s plenty to choose from. Obviously, there’s the digital and physical editions of the comic. Two covers to choose from, A by Vincent Danks, B by Andrew Richmond. If you want both covers, there’s the option to get two copies with a discount on the price. Digital copies get both covers, A on the front, B on the back. There’s also a free postcard by Vincent Danks for every print edition, plenty of different prints available for different tiers, including art from Richmond and Danks, and a bookplate edition with art from Gibson. You can see details of the various prints et al below.
There’s also, as you’d expect, add-ons for this one – a chance to catch up with issues 1-5 of Gravestown by Gibson, Danks, and Richmond in digital-only form.
