AMERICAN BORN CHINESE
The upcoming series American Born Chinese held its world premiere during SXSW at the Paramount Theater in Austin. Many people involved with the show were in attendance including cast members Ben Wang, Daniel Wu, Chin Han and Sydney Taylor, and executive producers Kelvin Yu, Gene Luen Yang and Melvin Mar. There was even a little more to celebrate since fellow stars Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan won Academy Awards early this week.
Also at the screening, exclusive poster art was revealed created by multidisciplinary visual artist James Jean. The poster depicts the journey of American Born Chinese main character, Jin Wang. It is also a very personal work since it represents Jean’s own experiences as an Asian American. You might recognize his work from the award winning Everything Everywhere All at Once, which premiered at SXSW a year ago. The official art description can be found after the image.
“Jean’s new design captures Jin on his way to school, with Chinese mythological hero The Monkey King shape-shifting into his backpack. While the backpack alludes to the idea of cultural and emotional baggage, the flora emerging from within is a pastiche of the paintings of Giuseppe Castiglione, an Italian missionary who became a court painter in China during the Qing dynasty and revolutionized traditional silk scroll painting by combining Western rendering techniques with traditional Chinese aesthetics.”
For those who didn’t attend the world premiere, American Born Chinese will premiere May 24 exclusively on Disney+. All eight episodes will be available to stream that day.
