‘Kowloon Generic Romance’- First Impressions

Do you want a story a pretty girl in glasses smoking and eating watermelon? Then boy do I have the manga recommendation for you! Kowloon Generic Romance takes place in a dystopian townscape where the people are brimming with nostalgia and follows the romanic life of real estate agent Reiko Kujirai.

Kowloon Generic Romance stands out more for its atmosphere than its plot. From a sequential art standpoint, it’s superb. Creator Jun Mayuzuki paces and frames each scene cinematically so that even pages of Reiko eating or smoking are compelling. The whole manga has an erotic Neo Noir vibe that’s hard to pin down.

However, reading Kowloon Generic Romance is a bit like eating watermelon– cool and refreshing but not very filling. I’d only recommend this to readers who will be satisfied by just spending time with an appealing lead character in an atmospheric setting. I did enjoy the first volume enough that I may pick up volume 2 to see how the series develops.

Kowloon Generic Romance is now available from Yen Press.
